Eliminating hunger by 2030 seems like an unreachable dream. The latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report shows conflicts, climate impacts, the pandemic, and economic crises continue to take a toll.
In 2023, a staggering 1 in 11 people worldwide faced hunger. Millions of families still can't afford healthy diets, many rely on food banks or aid, and children's futures are threatened by undernourishment while the demand for food aid skyrockets globally.
We need leaders to take drastic measures now because there is no room for this crisis in our future.
"Nothing is as absurd and unacceptable in the 21st century as the persistence of hunger and poverty, when we have so much abundance and so many scientific and technological resources at our disposal," - President Lula of Brazil
In July, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, now leading the G20, kicked off a global effort to implement mechanisms to share knowledge to scale up policies and programs to end hunger and poverty by strengthening crucial social safety nets. This is a step in the right direction but will only be accomplished with support from other leaders.
The Global Alliance for Hunger and Poverty will activate in November but over the next few months, we want to show G20 leaders that we are tired of inaction, and urge them to endorse this effort. Will you add your name to this open letter which we will be using as part of our campaign advocacy?
