They say dogs are man’s best friend, offering unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship. For Josh Fox, his dog Brady was all that and more. Brady’s brother, Hunter, continues to embody the unbreakable bond between humans and animals, a connection that profoundly shaped Josh’s life. When Brady passed away, the loss was understandably significant, but instead of succumbing to grief, Josh transformed his sorrow into a force for good. He started The Brady Hunter Foundation to honor Brady’s memory and make a lasting impact on animals, people, and the planet.
“The Brady Hunter Foundation allows me to honor his memory and make a positive difference in the world by advocating for animals, people, and the environment,” Fox explains. “Through this foundation, I aim to keep his spirit alive and inspire others to care for animals and children.”
The foundation’s first project tackled a local issue close to Fox’s heart: the treatment of horses in New York City’s carriage industry. Partnering with a team of childhood friends, Fox launched an initiative to replace horse-drawn carriages with electric alternatives.
“This effort was about more than just helping horses,” he says. “It was about sparking a broader conversation on animal welfare and changing how animals are treated globally. I truly believe all species are created equal.”
What began as a local campaign has since evolved into a global organization addressing critical issues across five pillars: animal advocacy, wildlife protection, empowering children, environmental conservation, and food security.
Empowering the Next Generation
One of the Brady Hunter Foundation’s key missions is to inspire our youth to become lifelong animal and environmental advocates. By engaging kids through hands-on experiences, the foundation helps to instill empathy and responsibility at a young age.
Fox recalls supporting an 8-year-old boy in Michigan who ran a lemonade stand to raise funds for local animal shelters. “It’s stories like his that show how even small actions can lead to big change,” he says.
The foundation organizes volunteer activities such as microplastic workshops, beach clean-ups, and animal enrichment programs. These efforts educate children about environmental and animal welfare challenges and empower them to be part of the solution.
Through partnerships with organizations like Scholastic, the foundation ensures that underserved kids in Title I schools have access to essential literacy resources. A Title I school is a school that gets federal funding to help students who come from low-income families. The goal is to provide more support to ensure these students have the same opportunities to succeed as others. “Education is key,” Fox emphasizes, “because it helps create future leaders who value compassion and action.”
The foundation’s scholarship program for veterinary medicine students reflects this commitment to education. One beneficiary, Shania Allison, is breaking barriers in a field that greatly lacks minority representation.
Allison, a second-year student from Queens, will receive The Brady Hunter scholarship for the remainder of her studies.
“One of my goals as a veterinarian was to help bring diversity to the practice,” Allison said, having worked as a veterinary assistant at Seaport Animal Hospital in New York before enrolling in graduate studies at the Long Island University’s (LIU) College of Veterinary Medicine. “Often, others in my community were unable to envision themselves as veterinarians due to the scarcity of veterinarians who looked like them. By illustrating to my community that this dream was possible, I hoped to encourage more people to come on board,” she told Veterinary Practice News.
“This support is about more than just funding,” Fox adds. “It’s about creating opportunities and inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.”
Protecting Wildlife and Promoting Sustainability
The foundation also dedicates significant resources to wildlife conservation. Through initiatives Fox calls “Vehicles with a Purpose,” the foundation has funded an anti-poaching aircraft in South Africa, a mobile veterinary unit in Kenya, and gave support to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to help remove snares from gorillas in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Closer to home, the foundation sponsored an ambulance in Miami with the South Florida Wildlife Center. “This vehicle has been instrumental in rescuing indigenous animals and rehabilitating them for release,” Fox notes.
The foundation’s work ties animal welfare to broader sustainability goals. By organizing beach clean-ups, they demonstrate the impact of pollution on marine life, connecting environmental advocacy with the need to protect wildlife habitats. “Our programs teach young people that caring for animals also means caring for the planet,” Fox explains.
Measurable Impact
Since its founding, The Brady Hunter Foundation has achieved remarkable growth. The foundation has touched countless lives with over 80 partnerships across 13 countries and nearly $3 million donated. Their initiatives have led to removing more than 44,000 pieces of trash during coastal clean-ups and providing clean water to thousands of animals through an irrigation project in drought-stricken Botswana. This tangible impact serves as a source of inspiration and hope for a better future.
Their efforts have also included sponsoring over 80 events that promote education, conservation, and advocacy. “Seeing the tangible results of our efforts, like the daily rescues made possible by our ambulances, reinforces the importance of what we’re doing,” Fox says.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, the Brady Hunter Foundation aims to expand its reach and deepen its impact. Fox highlights the importance of financial contributions and volunteer support to sustain their mission.
“Donations allow us to grow and help more animals, ecosystems, and people,” he says. “But there are many ways to get involved, whether volunteering your time, organizing clean-ups in your community, or simply spreading the word about our work.”
At its core, the foundation is about creating a movement of compassion and action. “Through this work, we hope to inspire others to care for animals, children, and the environment,” Fox concludes. “Brady’s spirit lives on in everything we do, and his legacy continues to make a difference.”
For those who want to be part of The Brady Hunter Foundation’s mission, opportunities abound to join this powerful force for change, honoring the memory of a dog who inspired a global movement.
