The Global Citizen campaign to defend the planet and defeat poverty marked a major milestone at Global Citizen’s 24-hour global broadcast, Global Citizen Live on Sept. 25, during which key commitments were announced through the hard work of many partner organizations.
Global Citizen Live represents a call to action to end extreme poverty and build momentum ahead of the G20 Summit in October and UN Climate Conference, COP26, in November.
The campaign calls on world leaders, businesses, and philanthropists to urgently commit resources to: meet the $15-20 billion funding shortfall of the $100 billion promised annually to the most vulnerable countries confronting climate change; businesses to help curb emissions through joining the Race to Zero campaign and pledging 1 billion additional trees by 2022 in support of the 1t.org ambition to conserve, restore, and grow 1 trillion trees this decade; $6 billion to provide food to 41 million people facing famine; 2 billion COVID-19 vaccines to be redistributed to low-income countries by early 2022; and for Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna to share mRNA technology with the WHO-backed Africa mRNA vaccine hub.
More than US$1.1 billion, 157 million trees, and over 60 million COVID-19 vaccines were announced during Global Citizen Live, thanks to partnerships between government, philanthropy, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
Global Citizen Live featured a remarkable lineup of world leaders, advocates, and artists supporting the campaign and its mission to end extreme poverty. Across seven continents, tens of thousands of Global Citizens were in attendance over 24 hours, as millions streamed the live broadcast event globally.
As a result of the hard work of many partner organizations, the Global Citizen Live campaign announced:
157 million trees, including 77 million trees by 2022; and more than US$300M to defend the planet
“Quite rightly, future generations will hold us responsible. So join me, and with one loud and united global voice, call on the biggest greenhouse gas emitters — the G20 group of nations — to make much bolder commitments to cut emissions," COP26 President-Designate Alok Sharma told the audience during the New York event. “Call on the richest countries to make good on their promise of money to support developing countries deal with the impacts of climate change, and call on world leaders to deliver an outcome at Glasgow we can all be proud of.”
Over US$800 million to defeat poverty and address hunger crises.
“Shame on us. At the height of COVID-19, the billionaires’ average net worth increase per day was $5 billion. And, yet, I am begging to feed the poor! Shame on us ... If we do not act today, millions will starve, nations will destabilize, and millions will migrate by necessity," said World Food Programme Executive Director David Beasley. "If we are struggling today with a population of over 7 billion, what do you expect will happen when there are over 10 billion people on earth by 2050? And, by 2050, due to climate change, we anticipate over 1 billion people to be displaced around the world! Wake up, New York. Wake up, Planet Earth."
Over 60 million COVID-19 vaccines for those most in need.
“We have what we need to vaccinate the world. But the experts told us, here’s what’s getting in the way: They said many countries are ready to produce vaccines at home. Yet they aren’t allowed to, because ultra-wealthy pharmaceutical companies are not sharing the recipes to make them. These countries have the means, ability, and the workers to start manufacturing. All they are waiting for is the vaccine intellectual property to be transferred over,” said Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, during the New York show.
“Every single person on this planet has a fundamental right to get this vaccine. That’s the point — yet that’s not happening. While in this country (and many others) you can go almost anywhere and get vaccinated, billions around the world cannot. This year, the world is expected to produce enough doses to meet the target of vaccinating 70% of people in every single country. But it is wrong that so much of the vaccine supply has only gone to just 10 wealthy nations so far, and not everyone else,” said Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex.
Announcements were made by the European Commission, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), Belgium, Colombia, Croatia, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, United States, UNESCO, the Green Climate Fund, and the Paris Peace Forum.
Global Citizen Live also saw announcements from the US states of Hawaii and Washington; the Brazilian states of Amapá, Amazonas, Ceará, Piauí, Pará, and Paraíba; the City of Paris, France; the municipality of Asker, Norway; and 43 cities in Maharashtra State, India.
Financial and in-kind announcements were also made by many corporate and philanthropic partners, including Accelerit Technologies, Aspiration, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Capgemini, The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Duolingo, The ELMA Vaccines & Immunization Foundation, Global Solidarity Fund, Leaders in Motion Academy, The LEGO Foundation, Private Foundation, Rotary International, Salesforce, Mastercard, Namati, PepsiCo, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, World Wide Technology, and Zendesk.
Thirteen organizations officially signed on to the Race to Zero campaign as a part of Global Citizen Live, including: Akamai Technologies, American Express, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), Boston Scientific Corporation, Citi, Cisco, Delta Air Lines, DocuSign, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Marriott International, Inc., P&G, Stanley Black & Decker, and Starbucks.
Global Citizen also worked with existing Race to Zero members to join the campaign’s Climate Coalition to encourage others to sign on to the Race to Zero ahead of COP26. Climate Coalition members include: Amazon, Bayer AG, Boston Consulting Group, Capgemini, Dentsu International, DocuSign, HP Inc., Intuit, Lendlease, P&G, RELX, Salesforce, Schneider Electric, Uber, Unilever, Walmart, Inc., and Zurich Insurance Group.
Global Citizen presented Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour global broadcast and streaming event featuring an extraordinary lineup of artists and performances from all over the world, including: Lagos, Paris, New York City, London, Sydney, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, and Mumbai.
The 24-hour live broadcast event aired globally on ABC, BBC, FX, iHeartRadio, YouTube, Twitter, and other platforms to millions of viewers around the world. On-site safety and precautionary measures, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and proof of vaccination were taken as part of all events, which were attended in person by Global Citizen activists from around the world.
In the lead up to Global Citizen Live, Global Citizen called on action takers to demand that the world's wealthiest nations redistribute 1 billion vaccine doses urgently this year and 1 billion more by early 2022; support the proposal to waive intellectual property rights on the production of COVID-19 vaccines and other medical tools, backed by over 100 countries; and call on Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna to share mRNA technology with a new WHO-backed mRNA technology transfer hub based in South Africa.
Global Citizen also called on countries around the world to reduce fair share national emissions to prevent more than 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming, and for developed nations to deliver on their promise to provide $100 billion annually to address the climate needs of developing countries. G7 nations and billionaires were also called on by Global Citizen and its partners to end the hunger crisis by contributing at least $6 billion for the urgent provision of millions of meals for 41 million people on the brink of famine.
Global Citizen Live represents an ongoing campaign led by citizens around the world to take action to urge governments, corporations, and philanthropists to make urgent change in line with the United Nations’ Global Goals, and the Global Citizen Recovery Plan for the World.
“Global Citizen Live is not a celebration, but an urgent call to action,” said Mick Sheldrick, co-founder and Chief Policy and Government Affairs Officer at Global Citizen. “We’re campaigning hard to get the world on track to end extreme poverty, calling on world leaders to step-up at the G20 and COP26 summits. Global Citizen Live is the beginning of a month-long countdown!”
Global Citizen Live highlighted the efforts and announcements of 67 governments, six philanthropic foundations, and 40 corporate partners, alongside global advocates and campaigners. Among millions of Global Citizens stood key global leaders, partners, and advocates at the forefront of Global Citizen’s mission to end extreme poverty: UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Executive Director of the World Food Programme David Beasley, CEO of Namati Vivek Maru, Rotary President-elect Jennifer Jones, Global Goals Champion and Advocate Eddie Ndopu, President of the Ford Foundation Darren Walker, President of the Paris Peace Forum Steering Committee Trisha Shetty, Hip Hop Caucus President and CEO Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., UN Next Generation fellow Valeria Colunga, advocate Eunice Akoth, and more.
“A Global Citizen is aware of the fact that we all share one planet, one health, one common destiny — and that every one of us matters,” said Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, in support of the campaign. “Everyone can make a difference, by working together, finding global solutions to global problems with unity, cooperation, and solidarity.”
As leaders step up to curb emissions, combat climate change, and defend the planet at Global Citizen Live, more ambition is needed ahead of the COP26 Climate Summit.
Global Citizen and its Race to Zero partners worked to secure commitments from many of the world’s largest companies and cities to develop verified science-based targets to reach net zero emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.
Corporate partners and cities signed up to the Race to Zero initiative, a science-based campaign to drive climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement. Global Citizen Live saw 13 companies, valued at $1.3 trillion in market capital, join the Race to Zero initiative. New signers include five Fortune 100 companies, the largest consumer goods company in the world, the largest tool maker in the world, and the largest hotel group in the world.
Private sector organizations that officially signed on to the Race to Zero as a part of the Global Citizen Live campaign include: Akamai Technologies, American Express, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), Boston Scientific Corporation, Cisco, Delta Air Lines, DocuSign, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Marriott International, Inc., P&G, Stanley Black & Decker, and Starbucks, who have each signed on to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), Business Ambition for 1.5, and Citi, which joined the Race to Zero via the Net Zero Banking Alliance.
Global Citizen also worked with existing Race to Zero members to join the campaign’s Climate Coalition aimed at encouraging peers, vendors, and partners to sign on to the Race to Zero ahead of COP26. Climate Coalition members include Amazon, Bayer AG, Boston Consulting Group, Capgemini, Dentsu International, DocuSign, HP Inc., Intuit, Lendlease, P&G, RELX, Salesforce, Schneider Electric, Uber, Unilever, Walmart, Inc., and Zurich Insurance Group.
"Urgent and widespread climate action is vital to unlock the pace and scale of decarbonization required by science. Every nation, company, and individual must play their part. This innovative collaboration with Global Citizen has delivered additional major US businesses to our campaign for the world's most ambitious climate leaders. With just one month until the milestone climate conference COP26, we are now calling on more companies worldwide to join Business Ambition for 1.5 degrees Celsius and play their role in delivering bold climate action to halve global emissions by 2030," said Tom Dowdall, Science Based Targets Initiative Campaign Lead.
While Global Citizen has been in contact with hundreds of companies to sign on to Race to Zero, many of the world’s largest companies and top emitters failed to respond to Global Citizen’s outreach after several attempts. These companies must step up to sign on to control their emissions and protect the planet now, not later. Global Citizens will continue to campaign and call on these companies to join Race to Zero by COP26 in November this year.
Global Citizen also worked with American Forests and 1t.org to ensure a sustainable climate and a nature-positive planet by conserving, restoring, and growing trees, supporting the global movement to save and restore 1 trillion trees by 2030. A total of 157 million trees will be protected and restored by 2030, including 77 million by the end of 2022.
Global Citizen Live received support from 12 members of the United States Congress calling for legislative measures to meet the goal of 100 million trees being protected, conserved, and planted in cities across America by 2030, including: Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), Rep. Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Rep. Donald McEachin (VA-4), Rep. Chellie Pingree (ME-1), Rep. Marcy Kaptur (OH-9), and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (CA-20).
⭕️ COVID-19 affects us all & we must unite in our response. THANK YOU @USAID 🇺🇸 & @SamanthaJPower for your commitment of $295M for COVID-19 aid as part of #GlobalCitizenLivepic.twitter.com/AO9L28cDY5

Mayors, governors, and sub-national representatives also showed their support from around the world, including: Lene Conradi, Mayor of Asker Kommune, Norway; Hilary Franz, Commissioner of Public Lands, Washington; David Ige, Governor, Hawaii; Anne Hidalgo, Mayor, Paris; and the Brazilian governors of Amapá (Waldez Góes), Amazonas (Wilson Miranda Lima), Ceará (Camilo Santana), Pará (Helder Barbalho), Paraíba (João Azevêdo), and Piauí (Wellington Dias).
"The protection of the wild is a major task of our generation. Global Citizens have called on leaders to take decisive steps in the right direction. We commend the Brazilian governors of Amapá, Amazonas, Ceará, Pará, Paraiba, and Piauí for their commitments to environmental protection and strong climate actions," said Rodrigo Medeiros, of Re:Wild.
On Aug. 23, and in support of local advocates, Coldplay invited eight Brazilian governors to join Global Citizen at Global Citizen Live in September, to pledge to protect critical natural resources throughout their regions. Governors made announcements from across Brazil, including six states from the Amazon, at the front lines of climate change. The Brazilian states announced plans to reduce emissions, increase the number of protected areas, and create state-wide climate mitigation and adaptation plans.
Thank you for joining us at #GlobalCitizenLive@AminaJMohammed, as we join in unity to defend the planet and defeat poverty! We greatly value our partnership with you and the @UNhttps://t.co/jc4IQFI78Dpic.twitter.com/O8rzPzLb4u

This weekend’s announcements build on earlier commitments over the last 18 months as part of the Trillion Trees Campaign. Global Citizen Live celebrates the global 1t.org community for its commitment to conserve, restore, and grow trees, including the following organizations with existing 1t.org pledges contributing to the trillion tree ambition by 2030: Amazon, Aspiration, AstraZeneca, Clif Bar & Company, HP Inc., Iberdrola, Jonas Philanthropies Trees for Climate Health Initiative, Nestlé, Pottery Barn, SAP SE, tentree, Travelers, Unilever, UPS, and VMWare.
“It is inspiring to see the world’s largest companies, governments, and individuals of all ages unite to make ambitious commitments to protect and restore our planet. 1t.org’s collaboration with Global Citizen Live to scale investments in our trees and forests will be an integral part of the solution in tackling pressing ecological and societal challenges,” said Nicole Schwab, Co-Head of Nature-Based Solutions at the World Economic Forum. “Global Citizen Live shows that collective action at a global scale is possible.”
Leaders make commitments toward $100 billion climate promise, but at least $15 billion shortfall remains ahead of COP26.
During UNGA, leaders made commitments in support of honoring their promise to provide vulnerable countries with $100 billion annually to respond to climate change. During his UNGA address, President Joe Biden announced that the US will increase its climate aid commitment to $11.4 billion by 2024. Despite being a step in the right direction, this is still far less than what is contributed by the EU, according to an analysis by the World Resources Institute. The G20 must keep their promise to provide an additional $100 billion annually to protect vulnerable nations from climate change. We have five weeks in order to meet this promise.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how strongly the health of one person depends on the behaviour of the other. We need decisive action and solidarity, both on individual and societal levels, to leave the COVID-19 pandemic behind us. Today, at Global Citizen Live, I join Global Citizen's calls for more vaccine equity and a stronger commitment to an encompassing solution of the pandemic that is sensitive to the capacities and needs of different countries. I thank all Global Citizens for advocating and strongly supporting the work of WHO, “ said Dr. Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of World Health Organization.
During the Global Citizen Live campaign, Italy committed to substantially increase its climate financing, in the run-up to COP 26. Global Citizen will hold them accountable to this commitment.
From New York, The Green Climate Fund, supporting developing countries to reduce emissions and build resilience, announced they would be accelerating the delivery of over $1.2 billion in the coming months.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, during his UNGA address, and in response to a tweet from Coldplay, announced €30 million for the Adaptation Fund, an international fund that finances projects and programs aimed at helping developing countries to adapt to the harmful effects of climate change, albeit much more is needed for Spain to meet its fair share.
Meanwhile, both Denmark and Norway affirmed their commitments to significantly increase their climate financing commitments, said Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, declaring:
“Denmark will contribute 1% of the collective target of $100 billion. And 60% of our climate aid will help developing countries adapt to climate change. If we can — G20 can! Let’s send a message to the G20 that cannot be misunderstood: Do not come empty-handed to Glasgow,” said Frederiksen.
CODE RED. It’s no secret that the climate crisis is here & it’s a massive threat to our planet. The US has an opportunity to lead the world to a sustainable future. It starts with the #BuildBackBetter act. Join me alongside @GlblCtzn to take action to support. #CodeRedCongresspic.twitter.com/mRPVqeUJOt

Global Citizen believes that Austria, Australia, Portugal, Spain, and Italy should also increase their contributions toward meeting the $100 billion pledge. We are grateful to ODI and Sarah Colenbrander for their analysis and support through the Global Citizen Live campaign. Global Citizen is urging US citizens to contact their local member of congress. The United States must live up to its promise.
Global Citizen Live calls code red for Congress and urges the United States Congress to pass most consequential climate legislation in US history.
It starts with the #BuildBackBetter act - and it needs support! #CodeRedCongress@glblctznhttps://t.co/kQyirCcUCq

“We have the chance to make history soon, when Congress could pass essential climate legislation through the Build Back Better Act... We need a true groundswell of public support to show Congress that this critical legislation must pass without getting watered down,” said Hip Hop Caucus President and CEO Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr.
Over 60 million COVID-19 vaccines pledged at Global Citizen Live in a step toward vaccine equity, but too little, too late as huge gap remains.
Inequitable vaccine distribution has left millions of vulnerable communities unprotected, and reversed decades of progress against other infectious diseases and the broader Global Goals for Sustainable Development. To end this pandemic, we must make the COVID-19 vaccines available to all, everywhere. Global Citizen Live is grateful for its partnership with the ACT Accelerator, the Pandemic Action Network, the ONE Campaign, and others in the collective effort to address vaccine inequity and injustice.
Extraordinary action is needed in the fight against COVID-19, and world leaders are uniquely positioned to enable a global recovery by ensuring everyone has access to life-saving vaccines, tests, and treatments. On Sept. 22, US President Biden convened world leaders to commit to vaccinate at least 70% of people in every country by this time next year to break the chain of transmission and end the pandemic. But more than promises are needed; without action, the virus and its mutations will continue to threaten us all and undermine the global economy.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield took to the Global Citizen Live stage to reiterate the call for everyone to have access to COVID-19 vaccines, especially vulnerable refugees whose circumstances have been further impacted by the pandemic. Global Citizen welcomes US leadership to galvanize efforts to vaccinate at least 70% of people in all countries by September 2022, but hopes to see this promise met by comprehensive action from the US. This includes sharing all excess and unused doses in hand or on order for 2021 as soon as possible, providing funding and support to help lower income countries get doses from tarmac and into arms, and critically by actively promoting an intellectual property waiver at the World Trade Organization and pushing pharma companies to share mRNA vaccine technology with Africa and other lower-income regions.
More than 60 million COVID-19 vaccines to be shared with countries in need were announced through Global Citizen Live. However, the world must step up to redistribute a total of 2 billion vaccines by early 2022. In advance of Global Citizen Live, Prime Minister Sanchez’s UNGA announced 7.5 million new vaccine doses and €2 million for UNITAID at Global Citizen Live. Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed 1.3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses primarily through COVAX on behalf of Ireland. This is Ireland's first dose sharing commitment to date and represents one dose for every five Irish citizens.
Croatia also stepped up, announcing another 200,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses primarily through COVAX, following a €500,000 and 50,000 dose pledge to COVAX made at Global Citizen’s VAX LIVE in May.
"In the global fight against COVID-19, we need commitments to be matched with action. We thank Global Citizens for their tireless advocacy to support vaccine equity, and we thank the governments of Croatia, Ireland, and France for their substantial vaccine donations during Global Citizen Live. This pandemic is the great public health challenge of our time, and we urgently need to unlock more vaccine doses to ensure that the most vulnerable in our global village are protected. It's time for countries and manufacturers to do their part and give us the doses we need to protect people everywhere,” said Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
"Only by acting internationally and united will we be able to effectively defeat the serious challenge of COVID-19, and that unity extends to all the other objectives that Spain, Global Citizens, and other actors defend. We all have to collaborate if we aspire to stop the climate emergency or to defeat hunger. They are enormous tasks that demand pulling all possible forces. This is why we join Global Citizen Live to commit to increase our vaccine donations to COVAX by 7.5 million and pledge financial support of €2 million for UNITAID as well as €30M for the Adaptation Fund to support the fight against climate change,” said Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain.
The world unites to end poverty, protect education, and fight the hunger crisis at Global Citizen Live.
Forty-one million people are on the brink of famine due to the hunger pandemic, reversing decades of progress on the United Nations’ Global Globals. Additionally, more than 1.5 billion children have also been affected by COVID-19 school closures globally, impairing the learning of marginalized children, especially those living in conflict or crisis. Eradicating extreme poverty, in all its forms, is the greatest global challenge of our time. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this crisis, pushing an additional 115 million people into extreme poverty in 2020 alone. To meet this goal, Germany and the European Commission collectively announced €75 million to Education Cannot Wait, IFAD announced pledges from 17 countries totalling US$23.7 million towards its critical work across the planet, and a US$260 in pledges to CGIAR from Belgium, Netherlands, and the European commission was announced during Global Citizen Live, among key pledges to combat extreme poverty.
“Hunger has tightened its grip on millions of vulnerable families around the world due to COVID-19. WFP is grateful to Global Citizen Live for raising awareness of this unprecedented crisis in an effort to mobilize global action against hunger,” said David Beasley, Executive Director, United Nations World Food Programme.
France would release 20% of its Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) in addition to pledging 60 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to COVAX at Global Citizen Live. SDRs could be used to fund COVID-19 vaccines, investment in economic recovery, and access lifesaving medical treatments.
In the spirit of collaboration and solidarity, government leaders showed their support for Global Citizen Live by pledging new financial and policy commitments.
THE ALLIANCE OF SMALL ISLAND STATES (AOSIS) pledged to increase its renewable energy capacity among Small Island Developing States through 2030 up to 10 megawatts, taking strong actions toward a meaningful reduction of emissions. “Small Island States are disproportionately affected by the consequences of climate change. It is time that we, as Global Citizens, stand up and take strong actions to protect the planet. Therefore, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) pledges at Global Citizen Live to almost double its renewable energy capacity until 2030. We call on all governments to follow suit and harness renewable energy capacities. Only together, we will be able to overcome the challenge of the century,” said Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and chairman of AOSIS. |
BELGIUM announced €6 million to CGIAR, a global partnership that unites international organizations engaged in research about food security, and €10 million to Least Developed Country Fund. “Global Citizens have advocated for an equitable and sustainable recovery for the planet from the COVID-19 pandemic. Climate change and food security are two issues at the heart of this recovery. Therefore, Belgium appreciates the opportunity to join Global Citizen's campaign and to announce commitments for CGIAR and the Least Developed Country Fund. In these challenging times, Belgium is proud to demonstrate its solidarity and to take actions that support the most vulnerable,” said Meryame Kitir, Minister of Development Cooperation and Major Cities Policy. |
CROATIA pledged 200,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses primarily through COVAX at Global Citizen Live. During VAX LIVE in May, Croatia donated 50,000 doses towards COVAX. Despite a small population, Croatia is making vaccine contributions to the world’s supply. “We thank Global Citizen for its critical advocacy work to end extreme poverty by 2030 and overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. We must act collectively to end this crisis. This is why Croatia pledges another 200,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to COVAX to extend the possibility of everyone to get vaccinated. This is our small contribution but it will make a puzzle complete,” said Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. |
EUROPEAN COMMISSION announced €140 million toward CGIAR, a global partnership that unites international organizations engaged in research about food security at Global Citizen Live. CGIAR research aims to reduce rural poverty, increase food security, improve human health and nutrition, and sustainable management of natural resources. The European Commission also pledged €25 million to Education Cannot Wait. “Global challenges need a global response and responsibility. This is Global Citizen’s vision, which I am proud to support. Europe is taking its responsibilities. Every single dose of coronavirus vaccine produced in Europe is shipped to the rest of the world, 800 million doses so far. In addition, the European Union will donate 500 million doses to the most vulnerable countries. It also commits €140 million to improve global food security and €25 million to Education Cannot Wait, to support education for marginalised children around the world living through conflict and crisis,” said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. |
FRANCE doubled their vaccine share pledge announcing that they would be sharing an additional 60 million doses on top of an already announced 60 million doses for a total of 120 million toward COVAX, to be delivered by the end of Q2, 2022. The country also announced they would release 20% of their SDRs. "To succeed in the fight against the pandemic and inequalities, France commits during Global Citizen Live to double the number of doses it shares in particular through COVAX, from 60 to 120 million doses, and to redirect 20% of the Special Drawing Rights it receives from the IMF to the African continent," said President Emmanuel Macron. |
GERMANY pledged €50 million to Education Cannot Wait to foster educational activities in the most difficult circumstances at Global Citizen Live. “We all see the dramatic crises worldwide. Children and young people suffer the most from hunger, violence, and lack of education. Every child has a right to education. Thus, I am proud to announce today at Global Citizen Live that Germany will commit €50 million to Education Cannot Wait,” said Gerd Müller, Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. Thanks to Globale Bildungskampagne and ONE Deutschland. |
IRELAND confirmed — following a decision of its cabinet — that it will donate 1.3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, primarily through COVAX. This is Ireland's first dose sharing commitment to date and represents 1 dose for every 5 Irish citizens. “When one of us is unwell, vulnerable, or at risk, we all are affected. That is why I am pleased to be part of the Global Citizen campaign and to confirm that Ireland will donate 1.3 million vaccines, mostly through COVAX and plans to make a further substantial donation in 2022. If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s that we are now more than ever before, deeply and intimately intertwined with each other. In that closeness there is great vulnerability, but even greater strength when we work as one global community,” said Mícheál Martin, Taoiseach. |
LUXEMBOURG announced a €3.8 million commitment to UNFPA Supplies at Global Citizen Live to support women’s and girl’s reproductive health. This is Luxembourg’s largest commitment on the Global Citizen’s stage. “As Global Citizens around the world, Luxembourg believes that gender equality is decisive to achieve an equitable and sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We are proud to participate in Global Citizen Live and commit to an additional €3.8 million to UNFPA, as part of our total support of €25 million. This contribution will support women and girls around the world, in particular reproductive health and rights,” said Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg. |
NORWAY announced the Biodiversity for Opportunities, Livelihoods, and Development (BOLD) fund, committing US$58 million over 10 years. The project will help safeguard crop diversity in genebanks, and facilitate its use by breeders, smallholders and researchers to develop new crop varieties and more sustainable farming systems, with particular focus on communities in lower-income countries. This is an essential first step to secure a sufficient, healthy food supply for all. Norway also announced a major increase of their climate investments. “Norway is very pleased to partner with Global Citizen to announce the new Norwegian Climate Investment Fund that will help developing countries to switch from coal to clean energy. We are also increasing our funding to help poor countries adapt to a changing climate," said Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway. |
STATE OF AMAPÁ, BRAZIL announced four climate and environmental commitments at Global Citizen Live. The state pledged to consolidate collective participation in the management of protected areas, to reach 0% fossil fuel energy sources in public structures and isolated areas by 2050, transform 100,000 hectares of productive areas from agroforestry systems to a low-carbon production model, and support traditional populations and families in humid areas and urban spaces to minimize the effects of climate change. “We appreciate that Global Citizen’s advocacy and Global Citizen Live call for more attention to environmental protection in the Amazon. These actions are decisive to tackle climate change. To demonstrate our efforts, the state of Amapá commits to strengthen management of protected areas, to reach 0 % fossil fuel energy sources in public structures and isolated areas by 2050, foster bio-economic activities, and expand climate adaptation initiatives throughout the state. The people of Amapá are all Global Citizens as they continue to defend our planet and end extreme poverty,” said Waldez Góes, Governor of Amapá. Global Citizen is grateful to the efforts of Re:wild and the Center for Environmental Peacebuilding in securing this commitment. |
STATE OF AMAZONAS, BRAZIL announced four climate and environmental commitments at Global Citizen Live. The state will create at least one additional preservation unit in its territory, implement state conservation plans, end illegal activities in state territories and those with Indigenous populations, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050 with interim 2030 targets in line with the 1.5-degree goal. "It is with great satisfaction that the state of Amazonas joins forces with Global Citizen Live to reinforce our commitment to the fight against climate change. As heads of federal states, we have the mission to take effective actions to defend our greatest resources, such as the Amazon Rainforest. The state of Amazonas commits to create one more sustainable use conservation unit in its territory, implement management plans for state conservation units, end illegal activities in state territories with traditional populations, and achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050," said Wilson Miranda Lima, Governor of Amazonas. Global Citizen is grateful to the efforts of Re:wild and the Center for Environmental Peacebuilding in securing this commitment. |
STATE OF CEARÁ, BRAZIL announced three climate and environmental commitments at Global Citizen Live. The state pledged to create at least one additional protected area in Ceará, implement climate adaptation programs, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050 with interim targets in line with the 1.5-degree goal. “It is necessary and urgent that we are all working together, united, and fully committed so we can guarantee the preservation of our planet. For this reason, we thank Global Citizen for its advocacy and we commit to strong environmental actions. We pledge to create another protected area in Ceará, implement climate adaptation programs, and achieve zero net emissions by 2050. We are all Global Citizens,” said Camilo Santana, Governor of Ceará. Global Citizen is grateful to the efforts of Re:wild and the Center for Environmental Peacebuilding in securing this commitment. |
