On a sunny day in September 1995, thousands of activists from across the globe met in Beijing for the Fourth World Conference on Women with a single purpose: to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all girls and women, everywhere.
The result was the most radical, progressive blueprint the world had seen for advancing women’s rights — the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action — which proposed a world where every woman and girl can live free from violence, go to school and learn, control her future, and earn equal pay for equal work. A world where She Is Equal.
Since then, governments have translated the promises made in the Beijing Declaration into concrete changes. These have changed lives for a generation of girls and women growing up across the world. More women than ever are participating in politics, live under constitutions guaranteeing gender equality, and are protected by laws against gender-based violence.
But today, no country in the world has yet completed the full agenda of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Worldwide, 130 million girls remain out of school, women-owned businesses receive just 1% of global procurement spending, and 800 women die every day from preventable problems during pregnancy and childbirth.
As we approach 2020, when the girls born at the time of the conference will turn 25 years old, we’re joining with Mexico, France, and UN Women to ask world leaders to follow through on their commitments to Generation Equality — and to fulfill all the promises made in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action’s framework for change for all women and girls. Without this, it will be impossible to achieve the Global Goals and end inequality for all.
Let’s send a powerful message to world leaders: Please tackle the unfinished business needed to achieve gender equality. Sign the petition now, and we will hand over your signatures to world leaders at major international summits next year, including during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women next March. Then tweet to share this petition with your friends and family.
