Young people are our future. Nowhere is that more true than across the African continent, where over 60% of the population are under 25.
But the energy and potential of millions of young people is at risk of being wasted. Across the world, unemployment and the cost of living is on the rise, and Africa’s youth are feeling the hit.
The pandemic, lockdowns and economic stagnation have all made finding jobs harder. And now, with the cost of living and food prices increasing, many young people in vulnerable employment don’t have enough to survive.
The majority of Africa’s youth work informally, and many are underemployed. They remain in poverty despite working due to low wages and lack of social security.
It’s time for the world, and Africa’s leaders to pay attention to the problem, and listen to the concerns of young people. 10 million new jobs need to be created every year to meet the increasing demand. Yet the job creation capacity of African economies is only half of what it should be.
With action now, we can push for investment in green jobs, education and social safety nets to allow the coming generation to fulfill their potential.
Take the quiz to learn why urgent action is needed to empower Africa’s youth.
