Hurry, go grab your cape!
Target and DC comics have paired up to kick gender inequality in the butt with a line of female superhero merchandise from DC Super Hero Girls this March!
Featuring the comic book industry’s first-ever action role-play toy collection that illustrate athletic female bodies that stand on their own in heroic poses and get this: some of them are even wearing pants.
Is it March yet?
The collection will include characters like Supergirl, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Bumble Bee, and Wonder Woman. Girls everywhere, young and old, are going to be happy-dancing from all the female empowerment features!
All these new action figures shine a bright light on girls and women everywhere, reminding the world that these XX chromosomes are the key to changing the world. Beyoncé has sung about it because she knows girls run the world. The UN has a whole Global Goal (#5) dedicated to it because they know it’s time to eliminate gender inequality, US FIrst Lady Michelle Obama even had a whole campaign about getting #62milliongirls access to education. Now girls (and boys too!) everywhere can say Pow! with an action figure that is more than just pretty plastic with a ponytail.
If it seems like the world is making a big deal about this, (or you think I'm making a pretty big deal) it's because it IS a big deal! Let's not forget Marvel's exclusion mishap in leaving out the Avenger's sole female team member Black Widow from action figure lines, or how Rey's character from Star Wars: The Force Awakens was omitted from a monoploy game, and even some of the other toy outputs (uh...how could this happen?? Rey was THE lead of the movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Where are all the fearless females of the big screen? This line is a big step towards correcting that-but there's even more in this new design.
Historically, even when females characters are included (and they do make up a percentage of comic books - if not movies) they are being misdressed. Throughout the years, many female superheros have been sexualized and drawn (or depicted on TV) in skimpy clothing. Who wants to go out in the freezing cold and fly in a mini skirt?
Female superheros have been cast aside and dress ridiculously for too long! Most of these new female superhero action figures have pants and are wearing clothes similar to every-day clothing!
Bam!
The only one in this new line up in a true skirt is Supergirl, and even then her top is a demure collared shirt- a far cry from the all too often low cut tops seen on other heroes.
This new collection will be featuring action figures, action dolls, other toys, and apparel. Oh my!

If the world wasn’t already raging with excitement over all of the merchandise madness, DC Super Hero Girls will also be getting its own animated television special on Boomerang later this spring. That’s a step up from the current short clips that air on DCSuperHeroGirls.com!
Target, Warner Brothers, and DC Comics are all reminding everyone that we can’t leave kicking butt to just the fellas--so what are you waiting for? Get your cape on!
