We can’t tell the story of tonight without talking about Hamilton.
It really happened: Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Original Broadway Cast of HAMILTON with Jimmy Fallon & The Roots joined Global Goal: Unite for Our Future — The Concert — with a legendary DIY version of “Helpless” from the hit musical.
The cast used instruments found around their house to perform the love song — a track about Elizabeth Schuyler falling for Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States, played by Miranda in the Broadway show.
The Global Goal: Unite for Our Future concert on June 27 — featuring Miley Cyrus, Usher, Shakira, Justin Bieber and Quavo, and loads more — was the culmination of a campaign where Global Citizens called on world leaders to support the development and equitable distribution of COVID-19 therapeutics, tests, and vaccines for everyone, everywhere.
Lin-Manuel Miranda walked in and our heart went “boom”. Alright, be honest now — who wants us to get straight to the video?
“I do! I do, I do, I do, I do.”
It was an apt moment that truly tapped into what the whole campaign and day of action on June 27 was about: solidarity in the face of unprecedented global challenges.
“The musical Hamilton is a story about hope, revolution, and love,” said Jimmy Fallon, introducing the performance. “A story as relevant now as it was back then.”
That’s just as true in the context of Global Goal: Unite for Our Future — The Summit. Prior to the concert, world leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the patron of our campaign, came together to pledge funds to ensure the solutions to COVID-19 will be available equally.
The "Global Goal: Unite for Our Future" campaign mobilized more than $1.5 billion in cash grants and $5.4 billion in loans and guarantees, for a total of $6.9 billion pledged to provide equitable access to COVID-19, tests, treatments, and vaccines, as well as support for the world's poorest and most marganalized communities.
The concert was a beautiful celebration of an astonishing day of action and impact — two values that strikes to the very core of everything Hamilton stands for. History is happening — with the greatest musical in the world.
🚨🚨 #GlobalGoalUnite & 🇪🇺 @EU_Commission have mobilized Over $1.5B USD in Cash Grants and $5.4B in Loans and Guarantees for a total of $6.9B Pledged for COVID-19 Relief.
