It’s a special time of year for Global Citizen. Global Citizen Festival in New York is less than two months away and Canadians are invited to take action.

Canadians aren’t just engaged within their own country, but are Global Citizens through and through.

Global Citizen Festival takes place in Central Park on Sept. 23 and it’s a great opportunity for Canadians to take action — and win tickets to the event!

Who is going to be there?

As always, Global Citizen Festival in Central Park will feature artists that range in musical genres. Headliners include Stevie Wonder, Green Day, The Killers, and The Lumineers. The festival will also feature The Chainsmokers, with special guest performances by Pharrell Williams, Big Sean, Andra Day, and Alessia Cara.

Last year’s festival in Montreal saw $12.9 billion in commitments for the Global Fund. The Global Fund is a partnership of governments, civil societies and the private sector that works towards ending AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

The Canadian festival saw performances by Metric, Grimes, Half Moon Run, and Usher with The Roots. Maripiere Morin, Patrick Langlois, and George Stroumboulopoulos hosted, and prime minister Justin Trudeau spent time on stage too.

The impact of these festivals cannot be understated.

Can Canadians get tickets? Of course!

Global Citizen is campaigning on a number of important matters that affect the whole world. Canadian Global Citizens can take actions to stop cuts to US foreign aid, to increase access to education, and expand on opportunities for women and girls.

Canadians can send tweets, sign petitions, and make phone calls.

Each action you take earns you points, and once you’ve earned enough you will be entered into a lottery. If you win that lottery, you will receive two tickets to Global Citizen Festival. You will be responsible for your own travel and accomodation.

You can take actions in multiple Action Journeys to be entered into the lottery more than once. The Action Journeys start on Aug. 1, 15, 29, and Sept. 15.

Why should you care?

The festival may be taking place in the United States, but the issues at the heart of it all affect us all worldwide.

When it comes to foreign aid, President Trump has proposed cuts of 32% of the international affairs budget. If those cuts are approved, our goal of ending extreme poverty will likely not be attainable.

Other actions include calling on governments and the private sector to respond to the famine crisis. There are currently 20 million people on the brink of starvation across Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, and Nigeria.

We will also be calling on leaders to provide adequate menstrual hygiene as a way to decrease the barriers girls face when it comes to education.

There are a number of actions to take around gender equality, education, foreign aid, global health security, water and sanitation and food and hunger. Read all about them here.

Get started, take action, and enjoy the show!
