Hometown: Houston, Texas, USA
Profession: Singer, songwriter, producer
Issue division: Girls & Women
Foundations: CHIME FOR CHANGE, BeyGOOD
When Beyoncé stepped into the global spotlight over nineteen years ago, she had an impact empowering girls and women everywhere. Her powerful voice shared messages supporting gender equality in relationships, equal finance, and being a strong woman through songs like Run the World (Girls).
Since then Beyoncé’s voice and actions have only become stronger.
She co-founded CHIME FOR CHANGE with Salma Hayek which promotes education, health, and justice for girls and women all over the world.
Through CHIME FOR CHANGE Beyoncé committed to donating $500,000 (USD) to support projects that fight human trafficking, provide education to girls, and combat infant mortality.
Beyoncé also inspires girls and women to appreciate their own creativity and art through events like Art LeadHERs which took place on International Women’s Day this year.
And she doesn’t stop there.
At the 2014 Global Citizen Festival, Beyoncé seriously surprised global citizens by making a guest appearance when she joined husband Jay-Z on stage. And this year at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival her powerful performance with Pearl Jam, covering Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” encouraged more global citizens to take action and help “make poverty history,” with the words of Nelson Mandela’s speech projected in the background.
Beyoncé’s actions from CHIME FOR CHANGE, to her charity BeyGood, to the inspiration girls and women around the world find in her music, maker her a powerful global citizen.
