The world is at a crossroads. A decade after the Paris Agreement, the promises made to protect our planet remain unfulfilled. Financing for climate and nature is insufficient, those countries committing to fossil fuel phase out are too few, and national climate targets lack the ambition and action needed to combat the climate emergency. COP30 is our chance to change this.
Set in the Amazon — the lungs of the Earth, home to over 30 million people, and a rainforest that resonates with communities across the world — this summit is a historic opportunity for leaders to chart a new course forward on finance, fossil fuels, renewables and nature. With the window to keep global temperatures below 1.5°C rapidly closing, at a time when forests are nearing a point of no return, frontline communities are bearing the brunt of climate impacts, and clean energy remains inaccessible, the stakes have never been higher.
This is why Global Citizen, alongside partners like Re:wild, is planning to announce a public mobilization and political advocacy campaign over the next year running up to COP 30. We will align our flagship global events with new activations in Brazil to ignite a wave of action, compelling leaders to commit to significant policies and finance for nature and the planet.
Over the next year, this campaign will mobilize action for the planet and the Amazon by leveraging the power of advocacy, pop culture and public engagement platforms in the lead-up to COP 30. Our goal is to do mainstream climate advocacy, engaging millions worldwide through Global Citizen’s high-profile events, digital campaigns, and artist ambassadors. By creating widespread public demand for climate action, we will push for significant commitments from governments and corporations to keep the 1.5°C target within reach and end deforestation by 2030. Specifically we will seek to:
Provide a powerful, global platform to amplify civil society's policy demands to leaders, catalyzing historic commitments and a new deal for the planet at COP30.
Tap into the allure of live music and pop culture to mainstream climate action, engaging artist ambassadors and performers to rally new audiences for climate solutions.
Unite the world around a clear action agenda through impactful storytelling that highlights the importance of urgent action, how progress is possible and inspires a shared commitment to protect the Amazon and the planet.
Undertake high level advocacy with key governments (in particular G20 and EU) and private sector to secure commitments ahead of and in Belém.
We must act today, to save tomorrow.
Global Citizen is calling on fellow non-governmental organizations, think tanks, civic sector, grassroot activists, and citizens around the world to raise their voice and take action with us. In the year leading up to COP 30, Global Citizen will be galvanizing millions of people around the world to take action, raise their voices and demand urgent actions from governments, Multilateral Development Banks, and major corporations, around three core objectives – which will serve as the launching point for further collaboration with policy partners and their campaign activities:
1
End Deforestation – Protect the Amazon
The world's tropical rainforests are the lungs of our planet – but they’re being pushed to a point of no return. We'll push for governments and the private sector to halt deforestation by 2030, including a $1 billion goal to protect the Amazon.
2
Accelerate a Just Energy Transition – Move Away from Fossil Fuels & Scale Renewables in Africa
Without clean energy for all, global climate goals are out of reach. We’ll campaign to ensure governments, private sector and public development banks deliver on their promise to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, and to end the era of expensive and polluting coal, oil and gas through mechanisms such as the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
3
Support Countries on the Frontlines of Climate Impacts
Climate justice demands that those responsible for the crisis support the hardest-hit communities. We'll fight for a major scale-up in climate finance, demanding new funding sources like international taxes to "make polluters pay" and ensure frontline communities get the resources they need.
In addition to these policy objectives, this campaign will help support impact projects throughout the Amazon, curated and monitored by Global Citizen partner Re:wild.
Advocacy requires our global collective efforts, which is why we are continuing with our practice of co-designing our campaign, sharing advocacy platforms with partners and raising our collective visibility. Partners who join our campaign will have opportunities to:
In addition to collaborations, we will also offer policy partners:
We’re uniting civil society organizations – in Brazil and globally – to amplify your stories, perspectives, and demands ahead of COP 30 in Belém. By joining as a supporting policy partner, your organization will gain visibility on a global stage and help mobilize historic climate outcomes over the next year.
