COP27 will be remembered for its progress on loss and damage, culminating in a deal for new financial arrangements, including the creation of a new fund. It’s essential the work must now start in earnest, especially to mobilize the new and additional funds needed. It’s clear issues still need to be resolved on which countries should contribute to the fund, and which countries will be eligible to receive. The fight to secure Climate Justice is far from over.

The world’s most powerful countries have not delivered or met their responsibilities at the G20 summit in Bali. Instead of driving progress on climate, leaders have barely made any changes to last year’s communiqué. Old commitments like ending inefficient fossil fuel subsidies or providing $100B in support to developing countries remain unmet, without any deadlines. While the G20 recognize the macroeconomic effects of the climate crisis and the need to urgently scale ambition, they don’t draw the consequences for their own actions, despite representing the biggest emitters and the richest nations in the world. Now the responsibility is with the COP to show the collective leadership we needed to see from the G20.

The uptick in reported cases of wild polio in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Mozambique this year and reported cases in the US and the UK have served as a stark reminder that as long as polio remains a threat anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere. So Global Citizen applauds the $2.6 billion worth of pledges from public and private donors towards the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's $4.8 billion goal announced today.
